RAMS & CPP for Bathroom Renovations

What compliance documents you need for bathroom refits, wet rooms, and plumbing work — and how The Site Book handles it for you.

Written by Nicola Dobbie, Founder, The Site BookLast reviewed

TL;DR

  • CPP: Required — CDM 2015 applies to every construction project.
  • RAMS: Strongly recommended — electrical work in wet zones and potential asbestos raise the risk profile.
  • Key hazards: Electrical work in wet zones, asbestos in older properties, and hot works when soldering pipework.

What compliance do you need?

Bathroom renovations involve a unique mix of trades — plumbing, electrical, tiling, and often structural work. Because you're combining water, electricity, and confined spaces, the risk profile is higher than many people expect. CDM 2015 applies to all construction work, including domestic bathroom refits.

Do you need a CPP?

Yes. Every construction project needs a Construction Phase Plan under CDM 2015. For a bathroom renovation, your CPP should cover how you'll manage the electrical work safely, how you'll deal with any asbestos, and how multiple trades will be coordinated in a small space.

Do you need RAMS?

RAMS are strongly recommended for bathroom work. Electrical installations in wet zones, working with hot water systems, and potential asbestos in older properties all carry significant risks. If you're working for a main contractor or housing association, RAMS will almost certainly be required.

Common hazards

  • Electrical work in wet environments (zones 0, 1, and 2)
  • Asbestos in older properties (floor tiles, pipe lagging, artex ceilings)
  • Slips and trips on wet surfaces
  • Manual handling of heavy items (baths, shower trays, tiles)
  • Hot works when soldering pipework
  • Dust from cutting tiles and removing old plaster
  • Working with silicone sealants and adhesives (COSHH)

How The Site Book handles it

Tell us what you're doing — "bathroom refit, Victorian terrace" — and The Site Book creates your RAMS and CPP automatically. It identifies hazards specific to bathroom work, including electrical zones, asbestos risk in older properties, and COSHH requirements for adhesives and sealants.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need RAMS for a bathroom renovation?
RAMS are strongly recommended for bathroom renovations, especially where there is electrical work in a wet environment, asbestos removal in older properties, or work involving hot water systems. Many clients and main contractors will expect RAMS before you start work on site.
What regulations apply to electrical work in bathrooms?
Electrical work in bathrooms must comply with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), particularly the requirements for special locations. Work must be carried out by a competent person and notified to Building Control under Part P of the Building Regulations. Zones 0, 1, and 2 have specific requirements for IP ratings and RCD protection.
Do I need a CPP for a domestic bathroom refit?
Yes. Under CDM 2015, a Construction Phase Plan is required for all construction projects, including domestic bathroom renovations. On domestic projects with a single contractor, you take on all CDM duties and must plan and manage the work safely.

Where it helps and where it doesn't

Pros

  • Manual-handling of sanitaryware and heavy tiling covered in RAMS
  • Water and electrical isolation procedures pre-filled
  • Confined-space working notes for under-bath and pipework included
  • COSHH for adhesives, sealants, and cleaning agents ready

Cons

  • No wet-room waterproofing compliance certificate template yet
  • No Part G water-efficiency calculation generation
  • Plumbing commissioning (Gas Safe) docs still need a specialist

Why The Site Book

  • UK construction compliance tool that ships RAMS + CPP + COSHH + inductions (readable and acknowledgeable in 9 worker languages on Business, with the language audit-recorded) + worker sign-off, including optional 4-digit shared-link PIN evidence on Business, plus site attendance, portal users, site files, document reviews, subcontractor evidence and inspections/actions.
  • Generate a site-specific RAMS first draft from a natural-language brief in under five minutes, ready for competent-person review - not a template library you hand-fill.
  • Controlled document workflow without an enterprise contract: version history and a recorded issue confirmation before a document is shared with a client or downloaded in the app on every plan, re-sign on revision with superseded signatures preserved plus PCPP import, cert tracking and document checking from the £39/month Pro plan - and on Business, optional named-approver routing (a designated approver accepts or rejects each version, with recorded reasons, before it can be issued) plus client approve/reject/request-changes via share links.
  • Transparent pricing: Starter £0, Pro £39/month or £360/year, Business £199/month with 10 management logins and 50 active site portal users. Worker document signing has no per-signature charge; project workers count as active portal users while assigned.
  • Build RAMS for any trade - add your own work types and method statements alongside the built-in library, reusable across projects, including a ready-made Commercial Solar PV group. Save a finished job as a reusable project template, or clone it, so the next job of the same shape starts from your own setup.
  • COSHH goes deep: a standalone COSHH assessment document, upload-a-Safety-Data-Sheet extraction, a site-specific substance register and an expert-reviewed library - plus per-worker RAMS sign-off and a one-click Audit Pack covering documents, sign-offs, worker evidence, attendance, incidents, COSHH, permits and up to the latest 500 live Site Diary entries.
